“Ordinal numbers”, no português números ordinais, é um dos primeiros tópicos que devem ser ensinados assim que o estudante inicia os estudos no idioma.
Os números em inglês são classificados entre números ordinais (ordinal numbers) e números cardinais (cardinal numbers). Muitos encontram dificuldade em aprender os ordinal numbers, mas trata-se de um assunto bem fácil e simples.

Quais são os ordinal numbers?
“Ordinal numbers” são os números usados com o objetivo de indicar ordem, posição, classificação ou sequência.
Geralmente usado para indicar a posição dos ganhadores em competições, os três primeiros números ordinais são:
• First – 1st / Primeiro
• Second – 2nd / Segundo
• Third – 3rd / Terceiro
Além disso, esses primeiros “ordinal numbers” são diferentes dos outros, pois depois do terceiro (third), acrescenta-se o sufixo –th no final, com exceção dos números 5² e 9º que sofrem mudanças na forma extensa.

Datas e hierarquias com os “ordinal numbers”
É possível expressar a data em inglês com os números ordinais das seguintes formas: tradicional - Sep 20 ou 20 Sep - e ordinal - Sep 20th ou 20th Sep.
Para titulações de hierarquização, a representação que é feita em número romanos, na pronúncia e na forma por extenso, são usados ou números ordinais. V eja alguns exemplos:

• Dom Pedro II - Dom Pedro the Second (Dom Pedro Primeiro).
• Queen Elizabeth II - Queen Elizabeth the Second (Rainha Elizabeth Segunda).
